First of all , the sooner you learn this the better. When you see anything Norton or Symantec..Avoid it like the plague! Top of the line is (in order of efectivness) Kaspersky,Bitdefender,Mcaffe,Avast. Someone suggested avg....stay away..it's useless! No realtime protection.

AVG is good but Active Virus Shield is the best since it uses the Kaspersky engine and virus definitions.

Kaspersky is one of the best anti virus products around. Now, you can basically get it for free from the link below.
I just got a new computer and it has One care on it with microsoft. If you get a free one you have no support, and I always feel that anything that is offered free there is a catch, you just won't see it.
AVG from www.grisoft.com. There is a free version (not a trial version - which they also have for other product) on their site that as far as I can tell has all the definitions of many of the ''bigger'' companies like Norton and Mcafee.
Norton slows down computers a lot.

Good and free antivirus programs are AVG, Avast and AntiVir.
